YAHOO and MSN join the Google Sitemaps program

Filed under: Sitemaps — arne on November 16, 2006

Google, YAHOO, MSNYAHOO and MSN Search have announced that they will support the popular format for XML-Sitemaps which was invented by Google in 2005.

In an encouraging act of collaboration, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft announced tonight that they will all begin using the same Sitemaps protocol to index sites around the web. Now based at, the system instructs web masters on how to install an XML file on their servers that all three engines can use to track updates to pages. This should make it easier to get your pages indexed in a simple and standardized way. People who use Google Sitemaps don’t need to change anything, those maps will now be indexed by Yahoo and Microsoft.

I’ve updated the xml-namespace definitions in the new beta version of my XML-Sitemap Generator for WordPress Plugin to the new standard.

Yahoo has already updated their Site Explorer so you can submit your sitemap to YAHOO and Google. The guys from MSN are a bit slower and will do some internal tests on their own websites before they open the submission for everyone.

Hey, thanks for the update.

I use(d) the Google Sitmaps Stylesheets ( as a style to the old (2.7.1) version of this plugin. However, I’m having little luck getting this added into your custom code.

Here’s the code I’m adding:

[PHP]$this->AddElement(new GoogleSitemapGeneratorXmlEntry(‘< ?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="gss.xsl"' . '?'. '>‘));

Any chance of adding a field to your plugin’s interface that will allow one to enter in the location of a stylesheet to be used?

Forgot one other comment. I’m using CST time (-6, set in WordPress) but my server is located in a different time zone (-8). Unfortunately, the plugin interface is detecting server time, instead of the correct time determined by WordPress.

The time is displaying in the interface’s log.

hello mr. webmaster of, just want to thank you for creating the google sitemaps… all of my site increase their SERP including my SERP rankings in yahoo. You help thousands of website owners world wide. Thank you so much..

I saw your site url in my wordpress sitemap plugin source code. Just want ask another favor, will you please create a ROR generator. As of now ,there is no existing ROR generator plugin for wordpress. Hope you are the first one to create that. Thanks and God bless!

Hi Gon Killua,

I’m glad that my plugin has helped you.
Since all major search engines now support the Google Sitemaps protocol, I don’t see any benefit in creating an additional ror sitemap which is a RSS feed with some additional information. But as far as I know, this information is not used or analyzed by any major SE.
If you can tell me about a real benefit or a existing example where the ROR format is being used, I would consider to add support for it to the plugin.

Best regards,

You can create new 0.90 (version) sitemaps with Sitemap Writer, it’s an XML sitemap editor from Emergency Soft .
You can notify Google and Yahoo! about your updated or new sitemap (XML) on Sitemap Writer’s homepage, just input sitemap’s URL.

I have tried both Google and Yahoo sitemap submission services. They work both very well. Google Webmaster gives a lot of useful informations about your site like internal links and external links or the actual speed of the Google crawler. Today (1st March 2007) I have tried to submit the map also to MSN but it seems that the service is not yet available.

Thank you for this great plugin.
I would like to ask you for a feature enhancement: my site has got a dynamic section handled by workdpress and a static part that I would like to include in the sitemap. Would it be possible to “append” a static sitemap to the one generated by you plugin?

My blog is located obviously in a different directory outside of my root but my principle page is:

(for example)
and my blog at

Here is my dilemma.

I have some 140 pages in the root directory of my site now. I will be adding more. Right now I use a program called GSoft Crawler to create a sitemap for google, yahoo and others. It works fantastic!

Obviously this PARTICULAR sitemap generator, GSoft Crawler, is only putting into it, the pages inside my main root directory, NOT for the blog.

It’s going to be quite tedious to have to add all of those existing pages to the one in my blog directory, if I have to do that. I am a bit confused at this point if I really need to do this.

The other issue at hand is that the pages in my root directory get updated alot, as it’s a vendor directory. So in saying that it could pose a problem. As well I will be adding individual vendor pages quite frequently.

So I guess my question is this.

Is it possible to have 2 sitemaps generated?

For example continue to run the GSoft Crawler for the main pages in my root directory and then generate still another sitemap for my blog directory, using YOUR plugin from OR am I asking for trouble?

I have activated the plug-in but have not generated a sitemap yet and not sure in doing this, if perhaps it will detect another one and I’ll have even more problems. (even though it’s in the root)

So any easy solution? I find that my posts for the blog are actually coming up in Google quite a bit without a sitemap generated for the blog, as I have the metatag generator in place and permalinks. But is that enough and do I really need this, if the case?

I tried posting this on the WP support site but no one has answered.

Thanks for your help!
